Facts About Charter Schools in New York State

As of the 2023-24 school year, New York has 343 operating charter schools serving over 170,000 students. Since May 28, 2010, when Chapter 101 of the Laws of 2010 was enacted, the cap on the number of charter schools in New York State has been 460. Since their inception in 1998, public charter schools in New York State have benefited from a quality authorizing environment and rigorous monitoring and oversight.
